Service & Governance
"The variety and complexity of the tasks performed by institutions of higher education produce an inescapable interdependence among governing board, administration, faculty, students, and others. The relationship calls for adequate communication among these components, and full opportunity for appropriate joint planning and effort." American Association of University Professor, 1966 (Revised April 1990).
Consistent with the AAUP's statement on the Government of Colleges and Universities, Barnard College has bestowed upon the faculty powers and duties for their meaningful participation in the governance of the institution. As stated in the Statutes in the Charters, By-Laws, Statutes and Intercorporate Agreement (January 1, 1975, with amendments).
All members of the Barnard faculty are expected to participate in the governance of the College through attendance and participation in Faculty Meetings and service on faculty and College committees.
